The World Health Organization announced that it had detected 18,000 cases of monkeypox in the world, most of them in Europe, while Spain announced the first death from this disease.
The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that 75% of cases of smallpox were detected in Europe and 25% in the Americas, while 6 deaths from the disease were recorded.
The Spanish Ministry of Health said that Madrid reported today, Friday, the first death linked to monkeypox, the first known in Europe, and the second outside Africa in the case of the existing outbreak.
Earlier on Friday, Brazil reported the first death linked to monkeypox outside the African continent in the current outbreak.
In its latest report, the Spanish Ministry of Health said that 4,298 cases of the virus had been confirmed in the country. She added that of the 3,750 patients she had information about; 120, or 3.2%, were hospitalized, while one person died.
It is noteworthy that the organization declared last Saturday a state of emergency due to the outbreak of monkeypox in the world, which is the highest warning level for the organization.
The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that the outbreak can be stopped if countries and peoples take the disease seriously, stressing the need to take the necessary steps to stop transmission by limiting exposure.
Regarding precautionary measures related to homosexuals, the Director-General of the Health Organization indicated that homosexuals should reduce the number of their sexual partners, and reconsider sex with new partners.
