Spotify denounces Apple’s new subscription offer

The world’s number one online music streaming company, Swedish Spotify, has again accused the US giant Apple of abusing its dominant position, calling on competition authorities to look this time into the new Apple One subscription announced on Tuesday.

Spotify, already behind two investigations by European competition authorities on Apple Store and Apple Pay applications, is moved by this new all-in-one and low-cost offer, which includes one of its two main rivals on the music streaming niche, Apple Music.

“Once again, Apple uses its dominant position and unfair practices to disadvantage its competitors and consumers by promoting its own services,” wrote Spotify in a statement to several specialized sites.

“We call on the competition authorities to act urgently to restrain Apple’s anti-competitive stance, which, if left unchecked, will cause irreparable damage to the developer community and threaten our collective freedoms to listen, to learn, create and connect ”, continues the Swedish flagship.

With 299 million users at the last tally at the end of June, including 138 million paying subscribers for a turnover of 1.89 billion euros, Spotify is by far the world leader in music streaming. A rare European company to hold out against American giants, it is ahead of Apple Music and Amazon Music, which each have about half as many subscribers.

Listed on the New York Stock Exchange since 2018, Spotify is valued at its current price at over $ 44 billion. But the company continues to lose money, due to significant investments to launch into new markets and develop its offer, in particular towards podcasts.
