Spyware Pegasus would have invaded iPhones during military confrontation

Citizen Lab researchers revealed this week that the spyware Pegasusused to hack iPhones, would have been used during a military conflict, targeting about 12 individuals in the Armenia. If proven, this would be the first known case of its use in a war context.

The attack took place between October 2020 e december 2022coinciding with the Military conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. Among the victims were journalists and human rights activists.

According to scholars, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, Anna Naghdalyanhas reportedly been the target of attacks on several occasions, which indicates his involvement in sensitive talks and negotiations related to the Nagorno-Karabakh crisis.

Naghdalyan acknowledged that his phone contained important information about the conflict at the time — when, say, iOS still didn’t have Lockdown Mode (Lockdown Mode). She highlighted the difficulty of maintaining security, even with highly secure systems.

In addition to her, researchers identified other victims, including journalists Karlen Aslanyan e Astghik Bedevyan. While five victims chose to remain anonymous, one is reported to be a representative of the United Nations.

In response to the allegations, an NSO Group spokesperson mentioned that they have not yet received the new report and assured that the company is “diligently” investigating reports of misuse of its spyware.
