Urban.brussels, the Brussels regional administration for town planning and heritage, has granted planning permission for the redevelopment of Square Sainctelette. The work will begin in the fall and will last three years, Brussels State Secretary for Urban Planning Pascal Smet (Vooruit) and Regional Mobility Minister Elke Van den Brandt (Groen) announced on Friday.
Sainctelette is an important crossroads of the capital. Historically, this area has always been strategic with the presence of the Senne, then the canal. The site also connects its two shores. The crossroads is used by both motorists and cyclists, but also by public transport (bus and tram). Currently, Sainctelette is a saturated, inhospitable and dirty crossroads.
The adopted project redesigns the traffic lanes and their width. Priority is given to maintaining car traffic outside the districts, and therefore on the main roads. It will no longer be possible to cut the tram line and the Quai du Commerce and the Boulevard de Dixmude.
For public transport, a real tram station could thus be created between Parc Maximilien, Yser metro station and Boulevard de Dixmude.
Pedestrian zones will be widened and traffic lights will be coordinated for crossings. The secure cycle station in the small belt will be extended and connected to a new passage for two-wheelers along the canal, under the Sainctelette bridge.
The objective is also to create a real “place” on the bridge, with homogeneous materials, modern street furniture, new lighting and trees. A total of 124 trees are planned for this project.
