In a new trailer for the sequel to the popular Korean drama series “Squidward Game”, star Lee Jung-jae plays the role of Gamer candidate Sung Ki-hoon. Sung Ki-hoon was one of the 456 debt-ridden people fighting for 45.6 billion won in the first season of the Netflix series. In the nearly one-minute trailer, he’s seen wearing an iconic series outfit, the green tracksuit worn by all participants in Game of Death.
He even retained his candidate number from season one: 456. In early August, Netflix announced that the new season would be launched on December 26 this year. The announcement video gives us our first taste of the atrocities to come in the new season.
The Korean production, which started filming in 2021, is considered Netflix’s most successful series ever. In the first season, the candidates competed against each other in seemingly harmless children’s games. But this horrific game doesn’t allow for second chances: anyone who doesn’t make it to the next round is killed instantly.
In its home country, Squidward captured the zeitgeist largely because of its overt social critique. Growing inequality, discrimination against social minorities, intense work pressure: almost all of the country’s main problems are addressed in this series. Netflix announced that the third season of the show will end in 2025.
