On Friday, Le Journal de Montréal reported that a nurse was suspended for three days without pay for eating peanut butter toast at the Chevaliers-De Lévis long-term care center (CHSLD), in Longueuil, on 2 last October.

In the midst of a labor shortage, this news caused a strong reaction from citizens across Quebec.

“The measure was too severe for the act committed. We met the employee and apologized to her. This situation does not cast doubt on his professional skills. We offer him all the necessary support, ”wrote the management of the Integrated Health and Social Services Center (CISSS) of Montérégie-Est, in a press release released this afternoon.

In the last few days, Minister Sonia Bélanger, delegate for Health and Seniors, discussed this suspension with the president and CEO of the CISSS. She reacted earlier Monday by saying that “the managers involved in the processing of the file will be met”.

Wishing to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals, the young nurse who has only two years of seniority was to be suspended today, as well as on December 9 and 11.

In the suspension letter, obtained by Le Journal, we can read that this theft of food intended for residents constitutes “a serious breach of your obligations of loyalty and honesty”, wrote the nursing management of the integrated health center and of social services (CISSS), on December 1st.

According to the Fédération interprofessionnelle de la Santé (FIQ), the union which represents the nurse concerned, the sanction was too severe in relation to the fault.

The management of the CISSS had met with the employee on this subject on November 3, to obtain her version of the facts. The nurse had admitted to eating the toast since she had a “stomach ache” and hadn’t had time to eat lunch before coming to work. She would also have mentioned “not knowing” that it was prohibited.

In addition, the CISSS adds that “the mechanism for processing disciplinary measures will be analyzed and revised so that such a situation does not happen again”, we write. We are sorry for this situation and reiterate that the managers are available, attentive and caring for the employees. »

On Friday, the local union pointed out that the young employee was even considering resigning, following this suspension.
