About 70 meters from the building authority, a resident noticed that the zebra crossing, which she uses regularly, ends in a crash barrier. The building authority of the municipality explains what is behind it.

The zebra crossing is now gone. The removal of the pedestrian crossing was a request from the population, who felt that the location in the middle of a curve was dangerous.

Municipality of Stein AG

  • In the Fricktal municipality of Stein, a pedestrian crossing led directly into a crash barrier.

  • The zebra crossing should be abolished because it was criticized by the population as too dangerous.

  • However, it was not possible to simultaneously remove the marking and attach the crash barrier at the relevant point.

“I wanted to cross the street and then I saw the crash barrier,” says a news scout from Stein AG. The freshly installed crash barrier on Münchwilerstrasse in the Fricktal community seems to be in the wrong place at the end of the zebra crossing. Or should the pedestrian crossing not be there at all?

The woman from Stein is concerned about safety at the site. “On the road is Tempo 50 and in front of it a curve,” she says. “It’s dangerous for children.” It is conceivable that children tried to cross the street and then could not get over the guardrail. Then they would be trapped in the roadway and difficult to see for a car coming from the north.

Population criticized dangerous transition

In fact, the zebra crossing should be abolished, as André Müller from Construction and Planning Stein confirms. “The population finds the place too dangerous anyway and suggested at a community meeting to defuse the situation,” he says. Therefore the transition will be removed. There are two others nearby that are being put to good use.

According to Müller, however, it was not possible to install the crash barrier and remove the marking at the same time. That’s why this strange situation has existed this week, since Tuesday and at the latest until Friday. A flower pot was placed on the side of the sports field path on Wednesday to prevent passers-by from entering the street space. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the construction and planning department directly. “We don’t bite,” he notes. In addition, the municipality of Stein had previously informed about the measures on social media.

«Desired state established»

Müller does not want to downplay the danger at this point, as he says. “It’s not ideal, we know that and the population has recognized that,” he says. Well, during the school holidays and after the completion of the temporary footpath on the north side of Münchwilerstrasse, it is a good time to cancel the transition. The foot traffic is much less than during school days. And as long as the marking is on the ground, car traffic must exercise the appropriate care and caution anyway.

The demarcation work was completed on Friday and the corresponding signage was adapted. “We can report that the situation has been resolved and the desired state has been established,” said Müller.
