Stoffel Vandoorne will take on the role of third driver for Mercedes in the 2020 Formula 1 season, which the German team, world constructors’ champion, confirmed on Friday. Vandoorne will share this role with the Mexican Esteban Gutiérrez.
Currently leader of the Formula E championship with Mercedes, Vandoorne will also be hired by the star brand as a Formula 1 reserve driver behind world champion Lewis Hamilton and Finn Valtteri Bottas.
Vandoorne competed in 41 Formula 1 Grand Prix with McLaren between 2016 and 2018. He had two seventh places, in Singapore and Malaysia, as the best result.
He joined Mercedes last year as a development driver, alongside his first participation in the Formula E championship with HWA Racelab, a team used to prepare for Mercedes-Benz’s entry into the electric car championship.
“I am absolutely delighted to join Mercedes,” said Vandoorne. “I’ve already had experience riding HWA last year. I am happy to now become an official member of the Mercedes family. “
Combining Formula 1 and Formula E is possible because the races are generally scheduled on different weekends. Only the dates of the Rome, Seoul and Jakarta ePrixes are in conflict with those of the F1 Grand Prix of Vietnam, the Netherlands and Azerbaijan, respectively.
Saturday, the Mexico ePrix, the fourth round of the season, is on the program.
