The Technics EAH-AZ80 are among the best earbuds money can buy. They offer excellent sound, very effective active noise cancellation and a comprehensive app. In addition, the earplugs almost always fit perfectly because the manufacturer has adjusted an important detail.

Technics charges around 300 euros for its brand new top earphones EAH-AZ80. That’s a lot of money, especially given the many good Bluetooth buds that are available at significantly cheaper prices. ntv.de tried out whether the high price is justified.

Almost always fit

Visually, Technics hasn’t changed much, the EAH-AZ80 have largely adopted the simple, yet elegant design of the predecessors. What is extremely important, however, is that the Japanese have changed the shape of the housing so that it is even more compatible with different ear shapes than before. This also applies to the very differently shaped auditory canals of the ntv.de tester.

And because Technics supplies exemplary silicone attachments in seven different sizes, the EAH-AZ80 almost always fit perfectly. Not only are they very comfortable to wear for several hours, the earphones, which are protected against splash water according to IPX4, remain reliably in place even during sports.

Excellent sound

A perfect fit is also a prerequisite for fully enjoying the excellent sound of the earphones. With broad, cleanly worked out mids, powerful, very deep basses and crystal-clear, detailed highs, the Japanese newcomers play at the top. Even ahead of top performers like Apple’s Airpods Pro 2Voice QuietComfort Earbuds II or Sennheiser’s Momentum True Wireless 3 the Technics EAH-AZ80 don’t have to hide.

Very effective ANC

This also applies to active noise cancellation (ANC). The Japanese newcomers don’t dampen constant noise quite as much as the Apple or Bose plugs, but they come very close. In everyday life, the small difference hardly plays a role. Even with soft music, you hardly notice the ambient noise on the train or on busy streets. In the office, too, the EAH-AZ80 effectively dampens the clattering of keyboards or the mumbling of colleagues. It is nice that there is only minimal self-noise when ANC is activated.

In order to optimize the noise cancellation, there is the possibility to individually adjust ANC in the associated app. For the sound, you will also find several presets and an extensive equalizer for your own adjustments in the pleasantly clearly structured application.

The app offers many options without confusing.

You can also change the controls via the touch surfaces. In principle, however, this is not necessary, since the basic settings are logical and easy to remember. For example, you can change the volume with two or three taps on the left side, and use gestures to jump a song forward or back. If your finger stays longer on the surface, you can switch between ANC and transparency mode or start a language assistant.

Telephoning always works

Speaking of ambient noise: The EAH-AZ80 also very effectively filter out road noise et cetera during phone calls – especially if you set it to “strong” instead of “normal”. The depths fall by the wayside a little, but you are happy to accept this for good intelligibility. You can test how well “JustMyVoice” works in the app.

A nice extra is that you can pair the earphones with not only two, but three devices at the same time. For users who value subtleties, the earphones support the higher-resolution Bluetooth code LDAC. For most users, however, it is probably more important that the Bluetooth connection is stable even over longer distances and that the earphones are very durable.

The test confirmed the manufacturer’s specification of around seven hours with ANC activated. If you use LDAC, the EAH-AZ80 runs out of breath much faster. The transport box offers reserves for almost another 17 hours. After 15 minutes in the case, which can also be inductively charged, empty earphones last for about 70 minutes.

Conclusion

The Technics EAH-AZ80 can convince in the test across the board. They don’t have any real weaknesses, the sound and active noise suppression are at the highest level. In addition, the earphones are very secure and comfortable, and a successful, extensive app rounds off the strong overall impression. However, the price of 300 euros is steep and for 100 euros less you can find almost the same plugs.
