Sunburn, mosquito bites, motion sickness… What are the essential oils to put in your suitcase?

Whether you are traveling alone, as a couple, or as a family, you have probably already had to carry part or all of your medicine cabinet in your suitcase to deal with the various ailments of summer. A significant weight which is not without increasing the price of excess baggage, and even more the CO2 emissions of the means of transport borrowed. Essential oils are emerging as the featherweight, natural solution to curing sunburn, mosquito bites, and other headaches and travel ailments that can easily ruin vacations.

1. Peppermint, the all-purpose oil

Peppermint essential oil alone can save you from many unpleasant situations on vacation, because of its countless virtues. Offered in tiny bottles, from 10 ml, this ally can travel in the hold, as well as in the cabin, to help you deal with certain ailments typical of summer holidays. Considered a stimulant, peppermint essential oil, whose fresh smell will leave no one indifferent, already has the merit of giving a boost in case of lack of energy, but that’s not all…

This essential oil allows, if not to treat, to soothe headaches, dizziness, sinusitis, rhinitis, even otitis, thanks to its decongestant properties, and to deal with motion sickness – including seasickness – for adults and children (from a certain age). It is also recommended in case of indigestion, nausea, and vomiting. The icing on the cake, it is a real ally in case of itching. In local application, it will calm mosquito bites, almost inevitable on vacation.

2. Lavender, the ally of damaged skin

If it is essential to slip sun protection into your suitcase to fight against the harmful effects of UV rays, no one is immune to sunburn, especially during the first days of exposure. Obviously, you should not find yourself in such a situation, but in the event of a burn, lavender essential oil will be your best ally. Known for its restorative and soothing properties, it will soothe the discomfort linked to sunburn, and help the skin to regenerate more quickly. This is also valid for irritated or itchy skin.

More generally, lavender essential oil proves to be a great companion for sensitive skin, more likely to develop eczema or psoriasis, for example. And just like peppermint, it will soothe headaches, nausea, and certain digestive disorders, which can also ruin part or all of the vacation.

3. The tea tree for little ailments

You probably already have tea tree essential oil in your bathroom to purify your skin, and even more to fight certain imperfections. But some of its properties, essential on vacation, remain too little known. It’s very simple, however, this essential oil is essential to fight against everyday ailments, seemingly innocuous, but which can upset your stay.

Canker sores, ear infections, colds, sinusitis, sore throats, cavities, cold sores, and even urinary infections, are among the sores that can be soothed by tea tree essential oil. In synergy with other essential oils, it can also be transformed into a deodorant or an antiseptic gel, just to lighten your suitcase a little more this summer.

Be careful, essential oils should not be chosen lightly. It is preferable to use natural and organic products, made in France if possible, and above all to read carefully the contraindications which can be numerous.
