Former world number one Dimitrij Ovtcharov was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Table Tennis World Cup in Weihai, China. The 32-year-old lost again on Saturday in a major tournament against reigning world and Olympic champion Ma Long. The 4: 1 success of the 32-year-old Chinese was already the 18th victory in the 18th duel with Ovtcharov. For example, the German national player has already lost at the World Cup 2019, the German Open this year, the Olympic Games in London and at two team world championships against by far the most successful player in recent years.
Ovtcharov had prevailed against Englishman Liam Pitchford in 4: 3 sets in the early morning German time in the round of 16. The second German player Patrick Franziska, however, failed after two clear wins in the preliminary round with 2: 4 to Lin Yun-Ju. The 19-year-old from Taiwan is considered to be a possible successor to Ma Long. Due to the corona pandemic, this year the World Cup will be held in a so-called tournament bubble, in which the players in the hotel and hall are strictly shielded from the outside world.
