The Carrera collection was designed by Jacques Heuer in 1963 as a tribute to the legendary Carrera Panamerica car race. Last year day, this year surprised us by offering a limited edition of 500 copies of this superb Carrera, with a deep green dial. This summer, Tag Heuer is once again paying homage to the original model by offering us the red dial edition.
Why red? This color is part of the identity of Tag, it is found in particular on the logos of the brand, the tachymetric scale of the hours Carrera from the 1960s, the hands of the Monaco or even Ayrton Senna’s favorite chronograph. The red is also reminiscent of the 1974 Silverstone which was one of the few red-dial watches of the time. Red is still a bold color today, it signifies strength, energy and passion, perfect for one of the most beautiful chronographs ever created.
In terms of design, it does not change from the original model, reference 2447, down to the emblematic lugs and pusher, only the size of which has been adjusted to suit the contemporary 39 mm diameter case. Originally the case was 36 mm. day, this year succeeded in modernizing its historical model while keeping its identity.
To ensure optimal readability, the indexes and hour and minute hands are faceted, rhodium-plated and coated with Super Luminova. Under its sapphire crystal, called “glass box”, the dial is recognizable among a thousand, particularly with its tricompax design: hours, minutes and seconds. The treatment of the brushed sunburst dial is superb because, depending on the light, the dial takes on hues ranging from bright red to crimson red, such versatility attracts and holds the eye.
The engine of this chronograph is the caliber Heuer 02 with an 80-hour power reserve. In response to the dial, the movement has also been personalized with hints of red on the engravings of the column wheel and the oscillating weight. These details can be observed through the caseback. This automatic chronograph movement is entirely made in Switzerland at Tag Heuer in Chevenez.
The watch is adorned with a black alligator leather strap which contrasts perfectly with the dial of this limited edition of just 600 pieces. Each copy will be marked “one of 600” and “limited edition”. It is now available but we have no doubt that there will not be enough for everyone. A collector’s item with an assertive and modern iconic design that will delight lovers of fine watchmaking, but not only.
