[Reporter Qiu Zhirou/Taipei Report]Lung cancer ranks the first cause of cancer death in my country. Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shizhong announced today (29th) that the LDCT (low-dose computed tomography) lung cancer screening program will be officially launched on July 1st. 2. The two high-risk groups with a history of heavy smoking are provided with a public examination every 2 years to reduce the mortality rate through early detection. Currently, 90 hospitals across the country provide screening.

LDCT is currently the only screening tool with international evidence that can detect lung cancer at an early stage. Publicly-funded screenings on the road in July include people with a “family history of lung cancer” for men aged 50 to 74 or women aged 45 to 74 whose parents, children or siblings have been diagnosed with lung cancer; and “heavy smoking history” 50 to 74 years old with a smoking history of more than 30 pack-years and a heavy smoker who is willing to quit smoking or within 15 years of quitting smoking.

The National Health Administration pointed out that the low survival rate of lung cancer is related to the stage of diagnosis. According to statistics from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, up to 50% of lung cancer patients in my country are diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. At present, the 5-year survival rate of stage 1 lung cancer is about 90%. , the second stage is close to more than 60%, the third stage drops to nearly 30%, and in the fourth stage, the 5-year survival rate is only 10%.

Smoking is an important and definite risk factor for lung cancer. However, compared with Europe and the United States, more non-smokers than smokers in Taiwan suffer from lung cancer, and the rate of increase in female patients is faster than that of males. Yang Panchi, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has led 17 hospitals to carry out the “Taiwan Non-smoking High Risk Group of Lung Cancer Screening Study (TALENT)” for risk factors other than smoking since 2014.

Yang Panchi pointed out that the results of the study found that people aged 50 to 74 with a family history of lung cancer had a higher detection rate of lung cancer than other non-smoking high-risk groups of lung cancer. In addition, only 5.9% of female lung cancer cases were smokers. In this discussion, the screening age for family history of lung cancer in women was raised to 45 years old. Taiwan also took the lead in the world, becoming the first country to include family history of lung cancer in free lung cancer screening.

Chen Shizhong said that in the face of lung cancer, in addition to the continuous efforts of health insurance in precision medicine, he also hopes that through the LDCT screening plan, the detection period of lung cancer will be advanced. At present, the proportion of the first stage is about 29%. Patients, it will greatly help the survival rate. He also emphasized that cancer screening cannot prevent the occurrence of lung cancer, and smoking cessation is still the most effective way to prevent lung cancer. He has been a smoker for decades, and he has been urged by everyone to “proclaim” smoking cessation success, and called on smokers to receive smoking cessation services.

Lin Liru, head of the cancer prevention and control team of the National Health Administration, further explained that the LDCT examination process only takes 5 minutes, and there is no need to fast or water before the examination, and the radiation dose is only 1/5 of the traditional computed tomography. She also reminded that LDCT screening found that The proportion of nodules is very high, and most of them are benign nodules. It is recommended that people with abnormal test results cooperate with the doctor’s suggestion to continue regular follow-up to observe whether there are new or changed nodules.
