Taliban in Afghanistan: Ahmat Sarmast on the end of his music school in Kabul

WORLD: What is the current situation of the school in Kabul like?

Ahmad Sarmast: We are closed, no longer working. I have advised the staff and all students to stay home, to stay away from school. We have to wait and see what the new regime does with culture and music. We don’t know how the Taliban will act this time, but I fear the worst. There are already pictures of destroyed instruments. The Taliban invoke Sharia law, but it allows music, it doesn’t forbid it, as they claim. We were assured that nothing should happen to the faculty and students, but can we believe it? Everyone is afraid of being punished for what they have done for the past eleven years.
