After disagreements between ZDF and ARD due to news programs running at the same time, there was another overlap in political talk shows – the whole thing was said not to have been coordinated.

Several times in the past few weeks, ZDF has shown special talk show editions about the corona virus with Maybrit Illner in the late Sunday evening. Their fixed talk show slot is actually Thursday evening. In this way, the special editions partially overlap with the political talk by Anne Will, which always runs on Sundays in the first.
“Not spectator friendly”
The program director of the ARD, Volker Herres, informed the dpa on Monday: “The decision of the ZDF to broadcast a special on May evening with Maybrit Illner was not discussed with the ARD / Erste.”
Herres added that the overlap was “not spectator-friendly, but we are pleased with the great response from the audience, which Anne Will achieved with her talk shows Sunday after Sunday in these extraordinary times”.
“It doesn’t need a ‘duel’ of Sunday evening talks”
Presenter Anne Will was also amazed on Twitter. In a tweet it said: “I don’t think it takes a ‘duel’ of Sunday evening talks. I’m a big fan of ZDF and its news and political formats and would therefore find it very viewer-friendly if we didn’t broadcast at the same time.”
I don’t think it takes a “duel” of Sunday evening talks. I’m a big fan of the @zdf and their #News– and # Policy formats and would therefore find it very viewer-friendly if we did not broadcast at the same time. But hey … ????????♀️ https://t.co/MW2wPuCfKW

The ZDF did not respond directly to the overlap on request, in a statement it said: “ZDF yesterday broadcast the third Sunday evening in succession to the ‘heute journal’ a ‘maybrit illner Corona special’ – based on the knowledge that that in these times of crisis, viewers have an increased need for classifying information and competent discussions of the many questions that arise from the Corona crisis. “
First discrepancies already in February
There had recently been disagreements between the public service broadcasters because of the “daily issues”. In mid-February, the ARD directors decided to extend the news program on Friday to 30 minutes, thus doubling the broadcasting time.
The ZDF had criticized a temporal overlap with the “heute journal” and referred to regulations in the state treaties of the public broadcaster, according to which changes in the program schedule – especially in the news – should be worked out for agreement.
