Tanzanian water authority strives to end scarcity in economic capital by 2023

Tanzania’s Dar es Salaam Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (DAWASA) said on Saturday that it plans to carry out 13 projects aimed at ending water scarcity in parts of the economic capital of Dar es Salaam and the Coast by 2023.

Cyprian Luhemeja, Director General of DAWASA, said that the completion of the 13 water supply projects, whose cost is estimated at 1,060 billion Tanzanian shillings (about 455 million US dollars), would enable the authority to supply water to the two regions by 2023.

At a press conference in the capital Dodoma Mr. Luhemeja said the 13 projects would include construction of Kidunda dam in Morogoro region which will supply water to Dar es Salaam and Coast regions, improvement water supply and distribution systems and the construction of sanitation systems in urban and rural areas of the two regions.

He clarified that currently in the Dar es Salaam region, the water supply has reached 96%. The production capacity is 520 million liters per day, but the demand is 544 million liters per day.
