Today, Monday, the Iranian Foreign Ministry revealed that Tehran does not have any preconditions in talks with Saudi Arabia.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said, in a weekly press briefing, that his country “will respond appropriately to any constructive action by Saudi Arabia,” according to what was reported by the local “Iran International” website.
In this context, Kanaani called on Riyadh to follow a “constructive approach” to improving relations between the two countries.
A spokesman for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security Committee, Abul-Fadl Amawi, said last month that the dialogue with Saudi Arabia had reached the stage of restoring diplomatic relations.
Amoei added that diplomatic talks between Tehran and Riyadh are likely to be held soon, and indicated that dialogue with Riyadh would constitute a basis for restoring relations to normal.
Iran has previously expressed its support for a reciprocal reopening of embassies with Saudi Arabia. Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said that Tehran supports a reciprocal reopening of embassies with Saudi Arabia, and appreciates Iraq’s role in promoting dialogue between the two countries.
In recent months, five rounds of talks were held between Iranian and Saudi officials in Iraq, which shares a border with the two countries.
At the conclusion of the fifth round of negotiations last April, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi said that he was convinced that an “understanding is soon” between Riyadh and Tehran.
The Iranian Foreign Minister also announced – in an interview with Iranian TV – that the Iraqi mediator had informed Tehran of Riyadh’s readiness to launch public talks at the political level, stressing that his country had exchanged Saudi Arabia’s same willingness to restore diplomatic relations between the two countries.
