Czech tennis player Petra Kvitová is striving to advance to the finals at the tournament in Doha. In the opening semifinal duel, she will be challenged by the American discovery of this season’s Jessica Pegulaová, who shot the Czech number one Karolína Plíšková in sets 6: 3 and 6: 1 in Thursday’s quarterfinals. Thirty-year-old Kvitová is in the Qatari metropolis for the third time in a row in the semifinals. In 2018 she won the tournament, last year after a one-year break in the final she lost to Belarusian Aryna Sabalenkova. The tournament four will face Pegula for the second time in her career, the first match at the US Open last year was won by a tennis player from Fulnek in two sets.
Three years younger, Pegula, the Australian Open’s quarter-final grand slam finalist, had to qualify in Doha and was threatened with disqualification in her semifinals after losing 3: 5 to young Russia’s Potapova. But in the end she managed the match, in the tie break she defeated her opponent 8: 6. So far, the 44th WTA World Player has lost just one set in six matches in Doha so far.
Today’s second semifinals will be played by former world leaders Belarus Viktoria Azarenka and Spaniard Garbina Muguruza.
