Zverev and Monfils dominated their subject in Melbourne
The German and the French won in straight sets in their Australian Open second round match. They will play in the round of 16.
Alexander Zverev, 3rd in the world, was relentless to beat the Australian John Millman (89th), however loudly supported by the public, 6-4 6-4 6-0 in 1h59, this Wednesday in the 2nd round of the Open from Australia.
“I feel good, I won,” he said. The atmosphere was great and I hope it will be even stronger later. I had prepared myself for everyone to be against me and whistle at me. For or against me, what I like is that there is atmosphere.
The German confirms that he will be counted on in the title race, he who is aiming for a first Grand Slam trophy after the lost final at the US Open in 2020 against Dominic Thiem. The road is still long, however, but it is not yet recovering too violently for him, since the Olympic champion will face the Moldovan Radu Albot (124th and from qualifying) on Friday to try to climb into the round of 16.
Monfils: “Guys, I’m back!”
For his part, Gaël Monfils (20th in the world) was quick to beat Kazahk Alexander Bublik (37th) 6-1 6-0 6-4 in 1h29, Wednesday in the second round of the Australian Open. “I felt great: I moved quickly, I served well, I did a few trick shots (outstanding shots) … in short: everything was fine,” said the 35-year-old Frenchman.
The stiff neck that forced him to forfeit Adelaide No 2 Tournament a few days after winning the title at Adelaide 1 seems well forgotten, as he had expected. “Guys, I’m back!” he told the audience. Last year, he left Melbourne in tears when he saw his complete helplessness in the first round.
On Friday, he will face the Chilean Cristian Garin (19th) to try to climb into the round of 16. He should have been expected by Novak Djokovic, but as he was expelled from Australia, the table cleared.
