Today in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, tens of thousands of citizens took to the streets and laid down on the road for a performance.

It was a non-violent protest to publicize the seriousness of the climate crisis, and it was said that it was the largest climate movement held in Korea so far.

Reporter Sang-Hoon Kim visited the site.

This afternoon, Sejong-ro in front of Gwanghwamun, Seoul.

When the siren sounds, the marchers suddenly lie flat on the road with their backs on the road.

From small children to students, parents, and the elderly, their arms and legs are drooping and there is no movement.

Non-violent protests held on the ground for 5 minutes as if dead.

It is a sign of protest that “we can no longer live like this” in the face of a climate disaster that has come beyond climate change.

“I did this performance because I wanted to tell the story that we have no choice but to go down the path of destruction and self-destruction (if we go on like this).”

They only need one.

Let’s prevent climate disasters together for the future we will live in.

This march was held for the first time in three years since the COVID-19 outbreak.

It is a large-scale climate crisis movement with over 400 civil society organizations participating.

The police estimated 10,000 people and the organizers estimated 35,000 people gathered, and it is the largest climate movement ever held in Korea.

At the forefront of the march were future generations, young students, who led the participants in the face of a climate disaster.

“(The climate crisis) is not actually caused by us. Climate disasters that will occur in the future become a crisis that we have to face.”

There were also many family members who took part in the march with their children.

This summer, which suffered great damage from exceptionally heavy rain and typhoons, became an opportunity for citizens to realize the seriousness of climate disasters.

“Not only our children, but everyone living together in our society is experiencing great pain.

Participants urged the government to take measures to protect the socially disadvantaged who are the first to suffer from climate disasters, such as families who died in a semi-subterranean flood.
