Tesla Model Y dominates French electric vehicle market in latest sales rankings

Even in France, the Tesla Model Y is starting to outpace other electric models in the sales rankings.

The French car market is still recovering. In May, new car registrations increased by almost 15%, when there were only 19 working days compared to 21 in May 2022. This represents 145,000 registered vehicles. But this remains a low level compared to the months of May before Covid. And if there is better on the production and logistics side, the industry is worried about a plunge in orders, which fell by 20% in April and May!

In this unfavorable context, electrics continued to conquer the market, reaching 15.6% of total volume in May. Proof that this time, these models are well established in the automotive landscape. Since the start of the year, more than 100,000 electric vehicles have already been delivered in France. For May, it’s 22,666.

And it is Tesla that stands out as the manufacturer that delivers the most electric cars to us. The American registered just over 4,000 cars last month. It is of course driven by the success of the Model Y, which accounts for 2,704 sales. The Model 3 now lives in its shadow, but it still won over 1,111 customers in May.

The second in the ranking of models in May is the Fiat 500, which confirms its popularity with a big score, 2,601 sales! We therefore have to wait for 3rd place to find a French one, the Peugeot e-208, with 1,914 registrations.

Next comes the Spring, which also has a good score, at 1,897 sales. And it is from 5th place that we find the formidable Chinese MG4, of which 1,593 copies have been registered. The MG4 thus has the luxury of doing better than the electric Megane and its 1,467 sales. The Megane retains the advantage over the total for the year, with 7,111 sales against 5,062. But it is largely outpaced by the Model Y and its cumulative 13,405 sales. The SUV is also in the top 10 cars, all engines combined!

For Renault, it is clearly a month “without”, the Losange being only the 4th manufacturer which has sold the most electric vehicles, after Tesla, Peugeot and Fiat. And it does barely better than MG. It must be said that in addition to the correct score of the Megane, the Zoé continues its descent into hell (491 sales) and the Twingo has experienced a big slack (303).

Over the year as a whole, Renault’s electric sales increased by only 6%, compared to nearly 40% for Fiat and Peugeot… and 114% for Tesla.
