The clearing continued on the Tesla site in Grünheide near Berlin on Friday. A dpa reporter reported that the trees fell one after the other. According to the East Police Directorate, officers were on site to monitor the situation. At first, nothing was known about disturbances caused by demonstrators, as a spokesman said. A spokeswoman for the US electric car manufacturer Tesla only confirmed in the morning that the work had started the day before. At first, she did not give any further details, such as how long the clearing should take.
Tesla plans to build a new plant on the Brandenburg site. On Thursday, the Ministry of the Environment announced that the State Office for the Environment had given approval for the early clearing of the almost 92 hectares of forest. The environmental approval process continues. “This decision does not anticipate final approval,” it said. Citizens can submit concerns and suggestions until March 5, which will later be discussed in public.
The ministry made it clear that Tesla could start work “at your own risk”. If the project could not be approved, the investor would have to reforest replacement areas in the forest. According to the ministry, there are also numerous requirements to protect the environment and the population during the work. To protect the environment, Tesla is planning numerous actions such as the relocation of forest ants and sand lizards.
In addition, according to the Ministry of the Environment, Tesla has received permission for preparatory measures such as the construction of construction roads to the affected area in accordance with Section 8 of the Federal Immission Control Act.
According to the ministry, numerous requirements to protect the environment and the population during the work have been laid down. The purchase contract for the property was signed in mid-January. However, a second, independent report on the property value is still pending. Ownership with entry in the land register is only transferred to Tesla when the purchase price has been paid.
