Batman: The cartoon series will rise again this spring.
EW has been exclusively informed that DC Comics is launching a new mini series with six issues Batman: The adventures continue In April. The digital first series takes place in the world of the popular show and was written by the show’s producers, Paul Dini and Alan Burnett, and illustrated by Ty Templeton, who worked on the show’s old comic series Batman adventure,
For many people, the Emmy award winner Batman: The cartoon series is the final adaptation of the Dark Knight. Over the course of 85 episodes, Dini, Burnett and Bruce Timm produced mature and emotional stories that not only rationalized the mythology of the Caped Crusader, but also introduced new elements that eventually came to the side of DC Comics, such as Harley Quinn and Renee Montoya, both of which can be seen in the new live action film Birds of prey (and the fantastic emancipation of a Harley Quinn)). Not only that, but the show also spawned several films, a popular video game franchise (the Arkham Asylum Games) and a whole common universe that shows like Superman: The Animated Series, Justice Leagueand a few more.
Batman: The adventures continue is part of an initiative to introduce new characters to DC Collectibles. Batman: The cartoon series Templeton designs these novelties in the style of Timm. So the comic will feature many familiar faces from the DC Animated Universe like Superman and Lex Luthor, and some that have never appeared in the world before, like Jason Todd.
“We went from Dick Grayson to Tim Drake and skipped Jason. What we do with it is to see this as an opportunity to go back and actually acknowledge that it was part of the animated Batman story,” says Dini EW “For the first time you will see this story and you will see what happened in this relationship. So it’s our chance not only to make Jason Todd, but also the Red Hood. There are other characters like Azrael that were popular in the comics [the time of the show]and Deathstroke, which we never used in the cartoon. “
Templeton adds: “It’s fun that we haven’t had to deal with the 15-year gap since we told stories with these characters. We can just feel like we stepped into these things yesterday because of the shows and comics are always out there. They never go away. I didn’t want it to feel like there was a big gap and Batman was old and Tim was in his 30s or something. I’m really glad it felt like the next day. “(For further clarification, the comic takes place before the traumatic flashback events in Batman Beyond: The Return of the Joker).
In the first issue, Batman and Bruce Wayne deal with two puzzles. First, a giant robot breaks into Wayne Enterprises and steals an entire laboratory. Second, there is Lex Luther’s mysterious return to Gotham City.
“We start with the Bruce-Lex relationship in a semi-sequence of[the[the[das[theBatman and superman Crossover]”World’s Finest” because it affects events. Where did Bruce and Lex go after being blown up by Batman and Superman? It is interesting to see the little duel between them, ”says Dini.
The first issue also introduces a riddle to the reader: “Who is the mysterious character in the shadows who watches all of this?” says Templeton. Dini adds: “There is a stranger in the city who staked out the Batman family, who knows them very well and who is watching them from afar with a mixture of amusement and deep hatred. This will eventually become a challenge and concern for them The guy is so good that Batman and the others take a look at him but have no idea who he is or what he wants, and that’s a mystery they have to solve. “
Looking to the future, Dini also offers a foretaste of the “intensive” history of Azrael: “[He comes] to Gotham on a death mission to salvage something that was stolen from the Order of St. Dumas and that brought him into conflict with Batman. Batman must continue to persuade him to murder members of the Gotham underworld while trying to solve this mystery of who took it and why. I think it’s one of the coolest revelations we’ve ever made, and given the traditions of our series, it makes perfect sense. That is one of the topics that I am most excited about. “
The legacy of Batman: The cartoon series lives on elsewhere today. In addition to Harley Quinn and Renee Montoya’s appearance in birds of prey, Tom King is coming Batman / Catwoman Comic will introduce Andrea Beaumont, who was created for that Batman: the mask of the phantasm Film, in the main universe of DC Comics. Dini is inspired by the continuing relevance of some of the characters he helped to create.
“It gives me a sense of pride and satisfaction to know that there are certain elements that I have introduced to the world that have become icons. I think I felt just like Bill Finger, Denny O’Neil or Jerry Robinson when they introduced a character who clicked and continued this story. As for the characters themselves, I always get a secret smile on my face when I see someone who plays as Harley Quinn, or all the attention that is given to her. I really love the film. I love Margot Robbie’s version of her. It’s almost like this: “Oh, I knew her way back and I see that she is still working,” says Dini. “On a personal level, it only makes me more determined: ‘Okay, now the next time I’m working on it will be just as big. ‘So it is very encouraging for me as a creator to receive positive feedback and keep going. “
Batman: The adventure continues – with a cover by Dave Johnson and a variant cover by Dan Mora – will appear on the shelves on May 6, 2020. The first digital chapters will be published in April.
