Nine of the main automotive and vehicle associations in Spain have come together for the first time in a platform for common thought and action. It will be called Neutral In Motion: For a Sustainable Automotive and Future, as they have transferred in a statement.

This circle of associations for a sustainable automotive in Spain is made up of the Spanish Association of Vehicle Renting (AER), the Business Association for the Development and Promotion of the Electric Vehicle (AEDIVE), the National Association of Companies of the Two-Wheel Sector ( ANESDOR), the Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers (ANFAC), the National Association of Bus Body Manufacturers (ASCABUS), the Spanish dealer association (FACONAUTO), the National Business Federation for Vehicle Rental With and Without Driver (FENEVAL), the National Association of Sellers of Motor Vehicles, Repair and Parts (GANVAM) and the Spanish Association of Automotive Suppliers (SERNAUTO), whose constitution is also established with the signing of a Manifesto in favor of decarbonization.

“The associations are aware of the challenge that the fight against climate change represents for Spain and Europe and the commitments that have been set from Brussels to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent in the world by 2050. This challenge and the transition to This model must serve, in addition to improving the quality of life of citizens and caring for the planet, to strengthen Spain’s competitiveness and economic capacities, through an inclusive economic transition that takes advantage of opportunities while maintaining economic strengths and industrial. Thus, the automotive sector is key to meeting this double objective, not only because of its responsibility in terms of CO2 emissions (road transport is the main GHG emitter, with 26.8% 2 of the total) but also due to the potential and strength of its value chain, which represents 10% of GDP in Spain and employs 9% of the workforce. That is why the signatory associations, aware of this opportunity and the challenge it entails, are committed to working together for these purposes ”, they say.

“Our goal is to help ensure that Spain reaches climate neutrality by 2050 and meets the precise intermediate goals, maintaining its position as a global economic and industrial benchmark. For this, all the agents that make up the automotive value chain will promote and decisively support the decarbonization of mobility / automotive and the adoption of measures and strategies that allow our country to advance firmly in the manufacture and commercialization of new vehicles emission-free, the development of electrification, as well as other clean fuels or the promotion of new mobility services. A model that, in addition, fosters an ideal framework for the creation of employment and investment, which generates economic opportunities for our citizens and workers and contributes to improving their quality of life, ”the signatories in the Manifesto of its constitution assure.

The nine associations are committed to playing a key role to consolidate and grow a competitive, decarbonized, efficient and sustainable extended Spanish automotive sector for all citizens; to invest in developing and transforming our sector, promoting decarbonization and digitization, prioritizing the strengthening of our competitiveness and jobs and maximizing the creation of value in our country; transform mobility, encouraging the development of new services and technologies, as well as new tools for relationships with customers and with society; innovate to take advantage of new opportunities and ensure that the new Spanish automotive sector maintains its leadership position at European level and its economic relevance; collaborate loyally with administrations and regulators in the development of change, providing a loyal, consensual and well-founded vision of the sector, from the support and full commitment to the decarbonization objectives of our country. But in any case, the associations are aware that, despite all their efforts, the objectives cannot be achieved without active policies to promote change.

All technology can contribute

The associations consider essential “a progressive transition towards a decarbonized model within the paths set by Europe, to allow operators to achieve the objectives in the most efficient way, with deadlines that encourage investment decisions” and call for a “consensual approach between political forces and administrations, beyond the political cycles, in the 2030 and 2050 horizon ».

In addition, they are committed to strengthening small and medium-sized Spanish companies, on their way to digitization and decarbonization of products and services, with a specific focus on R & D & I in the sector within the support policy, consistent with its economic relevance.

They also call for the installation of an extensive network of infrastructures for new fuels. “Specifically, it is essential to generalize electric recharging, both in the municipal environment and in long-distance networks. These infrastructures must prioritize interoperability and ultra-fast charging. This availability of infrastructure must also be achieved for the remaining alternative fuels without net emissions, especially for heavy transport vehicles ”, they claim.

Beyond focusing exclusively on the electric car, they also affirm that “any technology that contributes to achieving the objectives set is desirable. The best available technology, understood according to Community regulations as the most efficient, practical and advanced that, under economically and technically viable conditions allows the highest levels of environmental protection (or climate neutrality) to be achieved, is positive ”.

The support measures, they request, must seek to reduce the decarbonization targets within the established time frame. And they believe that the park needs to be renewed. “The decarbonisation of mobility will require active policies to remove the most emitting vehicles. This will require promoting incentive schemes and mobility policies to help renewal.

They also ask for the involvement of society. It is convenient for the consumer to be an active agent in the decarbonisation process through the promotion of innovative mobility services, especially in relation to electric recharging and self-consumption models, which, through tangible incentives, promote awareness and use responsible for new technologies.

They also demand “a greener tax system to achieve the objectives of decarbonization, promoting the introduction of new technologies with social and territorial coherence.” And, in general, “regulatory efficiency must be sought and excessive measures must be avoided to meet the same objectives.”

“The signatory associations strongly believe that this is the right time to drive clean mobility and achieve both temporary decarbonisation and economic goals in a way that maximizes the benefit to our society and economy. Consensus and common work will be essential in this long-term effort and that is why we understand that this circle of associations is a very relevant step to advance in decarbonization, maintaining industry and employment and promoting innovation “, they affirm.
