WORLDS LEAGUE OF LEGENDS. The world championship of the famous MOBA League of Legends which was to be held in China will finally take place in Europe. This decision should facilitate international travel for players, in the midst of a health crisis.
[Mis à jour le 30 août 2021 à 17h31] This is the big news for the start of the school year. The League of Legends Worlds, one of the most famous and prestigious of esport competitions, will take place in Europe. Through a press release published on August 24 on lolesportmedia and a video posted on Twitter, John Needham, the director of the Esport section of Riot Games confirmed some rumors that had been circulating for several days. The championship, which was originally to be held in China, will ultimately be held in Europe. A necessary decision in view of the coronavirus crisis and more particularly the abuse of the Delta variant in Central Asia, and its impact on travel restrictions:
“With the Delta variant … travel restrictions and COVID protocols have been even harder to tackle in 2021 than in 2020. Unfortunately, we’ve reached a point where it’s extremely difficult to ensure that qualified teams and their best players can come to the Worlds this year. That is why we have decided to pivot the Worlds from Asia to Europe. “
This is a difficult decision, which hits hard the many Chinese fans, who have already been deprived of a competition open to the public for the 2020 edition. Needham also thanks the Chinese cities who got involved and have tried unsuccessfully to find a solution to this sanitary and logistical headache. Terrible news for the Chinese teams who will have to do without the support of their public, while some of them can largely claim the title. It’s a different story for European teams, however. Already qualified for the Worlds, Rogue, Fnatic and Mad Lions will enjoy the support of their fans, provided the events are open to the public.
In addition, Riot Games has not confirmed the places where the different phases of the competition will be held (play-in, group stage, final phase), nor its exact schedule (which was to start on November 6 in China) but should do so in the next few weeks.
The regional championships are still in progress for the most part, but we still have a few teams guaranteed to be present at the Worlds 2021. In Europe, we will find MAD Lions and Fnatic at the main event, and Rogue in play-ins. In North America, these are 100 Thieves and Team Liquid who will directly join the group stage while Cloud 9 will participate in the play-ins. In Korea, DamWon Gaming KIA, Gen G and SKT T1 are guaranteed to join the competition, while China will be represented by FunPlus Phoenix and Edward Gaming. In the Pacific, we once again find the PSG Talon at the main event and Beyond Gaming in play-ins with Infinity Sports, team from Latin America. Of course, we will have to wait until the end of the regional playoffs to know the full list of teams qualified for the event.
