Although fluid for vehicles and some industries was suspended first, now the measure has also been extended to commerce and homes, so sales of electric stoves skyrocketed. In addition, the Ministry of Mines and Energy indicated that the contingency would last approximately nine days.

John Londoño, director of geohazards of the Colombian Geological Service, explained that the gas outlets in a section of the highway between Manizales and Mariquita do not have a volcanic origin.. “The Cerro Bravo volcano has been very quiet in recent years,” He stated and said that there is no anomaly or volcanic activity.

However, what does worry the inhabitants of the aforementioned departments is the suspension of the gas service. The Ministry of Mines and Energy defined new actions to mitigate the emergency resulting from the thermal anomaly that threatens the integrity of the TGI gas pipeline in the Cerro Bravo sector, in the municipality of Herveo, Tolima.

“Transportadora de Gas Internacional (TGI) reported that it has the contractor that will carry out the work with flexible tubing, who is mobilizing materials, personnel, equipment and carrying out preliminary activities in the field; seeking to advance the work under the safest possible conditions,” said Minminas.

According to this portfolio, the solution of using flexible tubing will allow having the gas transportation capacity required to meet the demand of residential, commercial, industrial, and vehicular users of the Coffee Region and the Southwest of the country. in an approximate term of nine days, as long as external conditions allow it.

This ministry also undertook to manage the mobility conditions for tanker-type vehicles to transport LPG and CNG in order to supply populations in the departments of Cauca and Nariño, served by Alcanos.

“The distribution companies of the natural gas service reiterate to users that during this suspension they keep the valves of the measurement center, the internal network and gas appliances closed,” the ministry added in a statement.

They also recommended that users who still have natural gas service make rational use of it and implement complementary energy alternatives.

‘It’s a nine-day play’

For her part, Mónica Contreras, president of Transportadora de Gas Internacional, told Caracol Radio that the responsible decision was made to close the gas pipeline in the section due to the abnormal conditions that were being recorded.

The official explained that TGI closed its supply and now the distributors are the ones who, with the gas they have in their infrastructures and alternatives, can provide service to users, the housewife, the taxi driver or the industry.

Contreras reiterated that Caldas, Quindío, Risaralda, Valle del Cauca and Cauca will continue to be affected for the next few days. He also made a call to find out what is the cause of the phenomenon, understanding that it is not of volcanic origin.

“It is a nine-day work,” he added. The official added that there will be gas rationing, prioritizing sectors that may be highly affected, such as hospitals. He pointed out that each distributor knows what his reserve is.
