The controversial reason for Mike Tyson’s infamous face tattoo

Mike Tyson’s former trainer has made the bombing allegation that the heavyweight boxing legend has the infamous tribal tattoo on his face so as not to fight late in his career.

The 53-year-old Tyson is considered one of the greatest heavyweights in the history of boxing.

He was the first heavyweight to hold the WBA, WBC and IBF belts, and later became the direct champion.

Late in his career, after being stopped by Lennox Lewis in 2002, Tyson was supposed to fight compatriot Clifford Etienne in February 2003. But just a few days before the fight, he decided to get the tribal tattoo in Las Vegas and pulled out of the fight shortly thereafter.

And his former coach, Jeff Fenech, admitted that he was stunned when Tyson skipped training to get the tattoo, and was bitterly disappointed that the former champion then decided to withdraw from the fight.

“My first impression was that I had never had a tattoo in my life, but I thought we would fight in a week and if you got a tattoo you couldn’t fight because they would scrape off and it would not be healthy to do so do that, ”Fenech told Fox Sports.

“We sat down and talked and he didn’t really want to fight and he wasn’t prepared for it and that was one of the reasons he got the tattoo.

“After an hour, I had tears in my eyes when I left the house that night. I went and stayed in a hotel because I was pretty desperate.

“I was away from home in Vegas for eight weeks to prepare him for the fight, and I stayed in a hotel and got on the first flight back to my family because that was my priority.”

The fight was quickly postponed for the following week and Tyson won by knockout in the first round. However, Fenech was not there to coach him to victory.

“A week later he fought and knocked out Clifford in one lap and I was upset,” added the coach.

“I was happy for Mike that he won, but I was also annoyed that I had trained him for eight weeks and was not part of that victory.”

Tyson would fight twice in his professional boxing career and lose to British Danny Williams and Irishman Kevin McBride.
