2020 has been a black year for many sectors, especially the automotive one. The losses in this area have been widespread due to the pandemic, but in Girona they have been especially virulent. In fact, the province has led the decline in car sales in Catalonia throughout the year. According to data made public yesterday by the Catalan automotive employer, Fecavem, vehicle sales fell by 30.7% in the Girona counties, thus exceeding the percentages of the other Catalan provinces.
Car sales are usually good indicators to take the pulse of the consumption of a given region, a thermometer of the economic situation of a territory. In total, 11,729 cars were sold in Girona during the coronavirus year, almost 5,200 less than in 2019. These are the worst figures in the last seven years.
The decline occurred in virtually all areas except for rental cars, which certified that they are the trend to take into account faces in the future.
The sale of private cars, the main business channel of the engine union, fell by almost 30%, from 11,680 to 8,180 vehicles placed on the market. There have been major falls. Sales to companies have fallen by almost half (42%), from 2,205 to 1,263 cars.
The same has happened with tactical sales, those that include “zero kilometer” operations and self-registrations. With this modality, dealers are forced to put them into circulation once they have been registered, so that consumers can buy them at a discount. In this sector, these “tactical” sales have fallen by 54%, with a turnover of 1,315 cars, while in 2019 sales were 2,865.
There are two small good news for the Girona car sector in this disastrous year. Girona is the only province in Catalonia that has experienced an increase in renting, the long-term rental that allows companies to have fleets of vehicles for a fixed fee and a fixed monthly cost.
This modality, which was previously purely testimonial, has been gaining ground little by little and is now presented as an increasingly attractive option for users. The proof of this is that, in a pandemic period, renting has increased by 1,155%, from 38 vehicles sold for this purpose, to 477 in 2020.
The field of sales to landlords (companies that rent at a fixed cost and to specific users, for days or hours), has also experienced great growth, quadrupling sales (from 134 vehicles to 494).
In Catalonia as a whole, the year 2020 ended with a fall of 28.82% in enrollment compared to 2019, a slightly better figure than in Girona.
During the month of December, sales have risen due to last-minute purchases from individuals and companies, as well as from dealers’ self-registrations.
According to Fecavem, “some buyers have also advanced the purchase in the face of rising taxes and the more than unfortunate news, that the incentives to purchase Moves and Renove will not continue.” In this line, the employer Fecavem and the Motor Guild, said that during the first quarter “we will have stocks registered to offer the prices of 2020 while we have them.”
Fecavem also noted that dealers have also self-registered in the last days of the year, some according to the indications of the brand, others to the desire to avoid the increase in the Registration Tax with the change of year in vehicles they already have in stock. Also for the impact of European regulations that will penalize car manufacturers who exceed the average of 95 grams of CO2 per kilometer traveled.
Fecavem and the Guild carried out a commercial campaign promoted by this institution with used vehicles on 10, 11 and 12 December, with offers throughout the territory distributed from dealers and sales. “This campaign has had a positive impact on our partners because sales to individuals and companies, discounting tactical registrations, have performed well. And now more than ever it was important to overcome this complicated exercise “, they assure.
The Spanish market closes above 855,000 units with a percentage drop of 32% and this poor result has been caused by confinement and the economic and health crisis caused by covid-19.
“We cannot be happy with these results and also because of the lack of sensitivity of the rulers and all the administrations. Now more than ever we need their collaboration and work in coordination to recover and this is the line of work we propose to them “, they affirmed.
