The Detroit Pistons select Cade Cunningham at position 1

The Detroit Pistons have named Cade Cunningham the #1 pick of the 2021 NBA draft. As expected, the guard’s name was called first at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

“It’s still a little surreal to me,” Cunningham said after his drawing. “I know it comes with a lot of responsibility, but I’m ready for it.”

Adrian Wojnarowski had already hours before the draft from ESPN reports that Detroit has committed to Cunningham. There were rumors in the days before that the Pistons were also considering Jalen Green and Evan Mobley for the first pick.

In addition, other teams tried to get Detroit to trade the pick. The Houston Rockets did this “aggressively”, but the Oklahoma City Thunder probably also lured with an offer. OKC reportedly also offered its own franchise star, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
