The emergency kit to treat digital “sores” … and other cyber problems

Harassment on Twitter, hacked accounts, identity theft … Fortunately, there is also a “digital first aid kit”, for how to react in all these situations!

Bites, cuts, sunburns, sprains, allergies … For all these little daily hassles, it’s always handy to have a first aid kit on hand. But now that digital is everywhere in our lives, we also need to protect ourselves from the small accidents of the Internet.

Small “bobos” of everyday life on the Internet

The NGO group CiviCERT, which brings together twenty organizations including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, has noted that we are increasingly vulnerable to digital accidents on a daily basis. Loss of access to online accounts, suspicious messages, identity theft, data theft, or online harassment are very common emergencies today. Messaging and navigation platforms are open doors to criminals who use them to carry out their cyber-misdeeds. But people don’t necessarily know what to do when they have these problems.

Emergency kit

To better arm us against these threats, CiviCERT has created a digital emergency kit:
Using short questionnaires, the digital care kit identifies your needs and tells you what to do, gives tips and tools to solve your problem.

Online harassment, tips for coping

Perhaps one of the most painful digital “bobos” is online harassment. In France, 62% of internet users declare that they were victims of cyber harassment in 2019, a percentage increased by 10% compared to 2018. Social networks such as Facebook, Snapchat or Twitter are the spaces most prone to harassment. To deal with it, the digitalfirstaid rescue kit offers a questionnaire to properly identify the typology of the attack that targets us, and decide on the measures to be taken. For example, contact social platforms using the “report” function, to delete insulting messages or photos.

Prevention is better than cure

This online emergency kit is useful in case of a problem, but it is also a source of information to prepare in advance, with many tips to put in place to reduce digital vulnerability risks. As much for harassment as for identity theft or other cyber attacks, the most important thing is to take care of account security by activating two-factor authentication, using a password manager, or a VPN in case use of a public wifi network. The digital care kit will guide you step by step to avoid all these problems!
