The president of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, has confirmed this Saturday that the exchange of prisoners agreed with the separatists from the east of the country will finally be consummated this Sunday.
«The exchange should take place tomorrow. We’re waiting. The verification is not over yet », Zelenski explained during an event in the town of Dovhe-Kaluske, Ivano-Frankivsk region, in response to a question from the Ukrinform news agency.
Zelenski stressed that this negotiation has been «The most difficult task of this year». The president has visited Dovhe-Kaluske to see the new bridge built on the Chechva River.
Also from the self-proclaimed Republic of Lugansk, they have certified that the conditions for the exchange are made, according to the RPL representative in the humanitarian subgroup for Donbas, Olga Kobtseva.
«We express our deep hope of that Ukraine comply with the commitments declared in the framework of the Normandy Meeting and tomorrow a complete exchange is carried out according to the formula ‘all for all’, the RPL (People’s Republic of Lugansk), meanwhile, has fulfilled all the necessary conditions for it, ” Kobtseva said as recorded by the Russian news agency Sputnik .
The Contact Group, formed by Russia, Ukraine and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) has agreed to the new exchange at a videoconference meeting held on December 23. In the previous meeting, organized in Minsk, the representatives of Kiev and Donbas failed to agree.
The last exchange of prisoners took place last September, after an understanding between the parties that received praise from the international community. The war in Donbas broke out in 2014 between the Ukrainian troops and pro-Russian separatists. Since then, more than 10,000 people have died, according to the UN.
