The HPI, these hyper-sensitive “zebras” made popular by the phenomenon series

Morgane Alvaro, mother of three children, divorced, housekeeper who does not mince her words, became a consultant for the Lille police, gathered millions of viewers in front of their screen. But what more does this police series with its quirky tone have? It depicts a woman with high intellectual potential, displaying an IQ of 160. And that contrasts squarely with the ways of doing and thinking of “neuro-typicals”, that is to say the majority of human beings. For this colorful woman, ideas go faster than music, the brain is racing and non-linear associations of ideas form her norm.

And the series does a great job of bringing to life those “HPI” thinking mechanisms and the tornado of diverse emotions that is Morgane Alvaro.

A functioning different from the “neuro-typical norm”, which, just like hypersensitive people, is of interest to more and more people who finally discover themselves on edge. remember the book Strong as a hypersensitive by Maurice Bartélemy who was a hit at the start of 2021.

Books I think too much et my child thinks too much by Christel Petitcollin also achieved worldwide success.

Indeed, “we talk more and more about hypersensitivity, overefficiency, hyper potential, etc., and scientific studies on the subject abound“says Julie Arcoulin, personal development consultant, specializing in toxic relationships, burnout and mental over-efficiency. “Zebra, high potential, overefficient, atypical, gifted and so on. So many words to define a rather complex phenomenon. Let’s be clear: these words mean the same thing. A brain that bubbles, that heats up, that never pauses, that understands quickly, that thinks, that questions itself, that goes from one idea to another, exploding emotions, strong values, incomprehension of certain things in society, a commitment to causes, an extreme sensitivity…“It would concern 2% of the population, with an IQ of more than 130. But some superefficients can very well fail the tests. Why?”Because they question the questions, everything is subject to questioning with the presence of emotions which also play a roller coaster.”

Advantages and disadvantages

Thinking like an overefficient is not easy, as Christel Petitcollin told us: “A lady kept talking to me about hamster families in her head all the time! There are two main neurological characteristics. The first is hyperesthesia, or having the five senses on alert much more than normal. They are in an exacerbated feeling. They are also hypersensitive, hyper-emotional.

The second characteristic, to know if one is overefficient or normo-thinking (and there is no pejorative meaning here), is that normo-thinkers have a logical, sequential and linear thought like a train of thoughts or a knotted rope with which we move forward in a logical and progressive way. Among superefficients, the Thought goes like a star, an idea gives rise to ten which give rise to ten others. We can well imagine that the organization of thought is different when you have an unwinding knotted rope compared to a spider’s web in which you bounce like a marmoset.”

All this brings drawbacks of course: feeling misunderstood, weird, different, on edge. But also advantages: creativity, energy to spare, original thinking…”Neurobiodiversity is like biodiversity, it’s a breath of fresh air that does a lot of good for society as a whole, at all levels.“, concludes Christel Petitcollin.
