When Naughty Dog gave us another piece of The Last of Us Multiplayer game concept art in January, we were told to expect more news on the exciting project later this year. This led many to believe we would see it in the PlayStation Showcase. It didn’t happen, and now it’s time to talk about why.
Naughty Dog revealed that The Last of Us Multiplayer has been delayed. An interesting statement to make when we didn’t have a release date in the first place, but the reason for that is Sony felt compelled to say something when they found out Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier was going to release an article reporting that the game had been reduced after the last internal evaluation. A smart move when Schreier’s report had many wondering if the game would ever see the light of day. I wouldn’t worry too much about that.
Six sources I’m in frequent contact with at Naughty Dog and/or PlayStation Studios all say the downscaling comes after multiple scalings due to higher and higher ambitions. One of the problems with these ambitions is that they obviously required more resources. This demand has grown so much that it has started to affect the other games Naughty Dog is working on these days, including the single-player game mentioned in the Twitter post. This reached a boiling point a few weeks ago, leading to the decision to move a significant portion of The Last of Us Multiplayer team to more traditional Naughty Dog games in development (no, the more advanced is not The Last of Us: Part III) while those who remain and parts of Bungie assess the future direction of the live service game and what to cut back.
Needless to say, that means we may forget to see or hear anything more about The Last of Us Multiplayer officially this summer. Maybe we’ll get a little update on outbreak day in September, but that’s it.
What do you think ? Is it a good thing that Naughty Dog is focusing on more single-player games, or would you like to see The Last of Us Multiplayer’s mix of The Division, Fortnite, and STALKER?
