BEIRUT, Oct. 5, 2021 (Xinhua) — The Lebanese army announced on Tuesday that it seized more than 28 tons of ammonium nitrate at a gas station in the eastern border town of Arsal with Syria.

The army command said in a statement today that “following the availability of information about the presence of ammonium nitrate in the town of Arsal, an army force and a patrol of the Intelligence Directorate raided yesterday a fuel station in the town,” located in the northern Bekaa region bordering Syria in eastern Lebanon.

And she added that the forces seized 28,275 kilograms of ammonium nitrate inside the gas station, with a nitrogen content of 26 percent on their bags, noting that they had arrested four, a Lebanese and three Syrians.

The statement stated that the interrogation of the detainees was started, and a sample of nitrates was sent to check the nitrogen content in it.

Ammonium nitrate is an industrial chemical with a medium explosive, and is used in the manufacture of fertilizers, as well as in the manufacture of explosives, especially in the field of mining and mining, according to reports.

On August 4, 2020, the ignition of 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate stored unprotected at Beirut International Port caused a huge explosion that killed more than 200 people and injured more than 6,500 others, as well as causing massive material damage to residential and commercial neighborhoods in the Lebanese capital. .
