Olympic basketball champion in 1972 as part of the USSR national team Alzhan Zharmukhamedov died at the age of 78. About it reported on the CSKA website.

“Today, after a long illness, the great player of CSKA and the national team of our country, Alzhan Zharmukhamedov, passed away. The legendary Turkestan Serpent was 78,” the message says.

Zharmukhamedov was born in Tajikistan and at the initial stage of his career he defended the colors of the army club from Tashkent. He moved to Moscow in 1969 and played for CSKA for 11 seasons. With the team, he won the European Champions Cup (1971) and 10 USSR titles.

As part of the USSR national team, Zharmukhamedov won the gold of the 1972 Olympic Games and the bronze of the 1976 Olympics, three titles at the European Championships (1967, 1971, 1979), silver (1978) and bronze (1970) of the world championships.

In 2012, CSKA held a ceremony honoring Zharmukhamedov, during which a symbolic jersey with his number was raised under the arches of USC CSKA.
