In April 2020, the limit for contactless payments with bank cards was raised to 50 euros. Previously, payments up to 25 euros could be made contactless without entering a PIN code. Since then, you can make several contactless payments in one day until the limit of 100 euros is reached. Previously, this limit was 50 euros.
“Contactless payment is the most hygienic way to pay for your purchases in these times of health crisis. You no longer have to touch the keypad of the payment terminal to make the payment,” Febelfin said at the time, at the start of the pandemic. “This measure will remain in force as long as it is necessary”.
But in the meantime, Belgians seem attached to their contactless payments. “The adjustment of 25 to 50 euros per transaction was particularly appreciated by consumers. Today, there is rather a demand to go even further (i.e. beyond 50 euros),” Febelfin said on Friday. However, the limit of 50 euros has been set at European level.
Febelfin says around 60% of all card payments are currently made contactless. Before the crisis, this figure was 16%.
