The coordinator of the National Front for the Defense of the Constitution (Fndc- Guinean platform bringing together political parties and civil society organizations), was arrested on Saturday at dawn, local media and the Fndc reported.

“The national coordinator of the National Front for the Defense of the Constitution was arrested late at night at his home,” Kalenews said in an article on Saturday.

“Fonikè Mengué, who is at the head of the movement that sparked the demonstrations, was arrested by security agents,” said this Guinean newspaper.

The Fndc announced in a statement on Saturday that it learned “with dismay of the kidnapping of its National Coordinator Oumar Sylla, alias Fonikè Menguè this Saturday, July 30, 2022 around 1:40 a.m. at his home, by a group of soldiers and hooded and heavily armed gendarmes”.

The Fndc organized several demonstrations in Guinea on Thursday and Friday which aimed in particular to denounce the “unilateral management of the transition” by the junta as well as its “systematic refusal to open a framework for credible dialogue” to define the terms of the transition.

According to the Guinean government, these demonstrations left one dead and several injured. Several people were also arrested for “disturbing public order” and “destruction of property”.

The Fndc, on the other hand, announced in a press release on Friday that the violence of the police left “four dead and several injured, including five serious cases” among the demonstrators.

The movement underlined in its press release that it is “deeply shocked and outraged by the numerous losses of human life recorded during the day of Friday July 29” where “four cases of death” were notified to it by its monitoring service and by the families of the victims.

“We also deplore several gunshot wounds, five (5) of whom are between life and death”, regretted the Fndc.

On Thursday, the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Conakry Court of Appeal announced in a press release read on national television that legal proceedings will be initiated against the organizers of the demonstration and the participants.
