The Omicron variant of the major coronavirus in France

CORONAVIRUS – France is no exception. Like other countries, like the United States, where Omicron exploded in a few days, France is now also mainly affected by what a variant from coronavirus.

According to data released this Thursday, December 30 by Public Health France, the country has recorded since the beginning of the week at least 62.4% of screening tests indicating a profile compatible with Omicron.

“In week 51, the circulation of SARS-CoV-2 greatly accelerated (+ 50%),” notes the organization. The 10-49 year olds had the highest incidence rates (corrected for the effect of the December 25 public holiday) (> 900 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), reaching 1,770 (+ 124%) among 20-29 year olds. The incidence rate exceeded 1,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in Île-de-France, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Corsica and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes ”.

“As of December 28, 78.7% of the total population had received a complete primary vaccination. Among people aged 18 and over, 43.7% had received a booster dose (70.6% among those aged 65 and over) ”, we note while recalling that during“ this period of festive gatherings, strict adherence to all barrier measures, including reduced contact and frequent ventilation of enclosed areas, is more necessary than ever ”.

More than 3,500 people with Covid-19 are currently hospitalized in critical care departments, where the most serious cases are treated. In detail, critical care services are currently treating 3,506 patients seriously affected by the coronavirus, including 299 new ones admitted over the past 24 hours.

Over 200,000 cases per day

In total, French hospitals welcome 18,321 Covid patients, including 1,922 new ones admitted only between Wednesday and Thursday. In 24 hours, 180 Covid patients died in French hospitals, bringing the total death toll to 123,552 since the start of the epidemic.

Between Wednesday and Thursday 206,243 new people tested positive for Covid-19. The threshold of 200,000 cases per day was exceeded for the first time on Wednesday, a new record after nearly 180,000 cases on Tuesday.

Faced with the tidal wave of contamination due to the Omicron variant, the government announced on Monday new health restriction measures such as the compulsory use of telework in the companies concerned or the return of gauges for public events.

The executive also decided to speed up the timetable for the bill transforming the health pass into a vaccination pass, which will be discussed on Monday in the National Assembly and then on January 5 in the Senate with an implementation expected on January 15.
