The new generation of consoles arrived in November 2020. Or, at least, that’s what Sony and Microsoft claim. More than a year after the launch of PlayStation 5 Y Xbox Series XObtaining one of the two machines is still practically as complicated as before its (alleged) commercialization. During this time, chip shortages have been directly pointed to as the main reason neither of the two companies are managing to meet demand. But nevertheless, Phil Spencer, main responsible for Xbox, points to another reason in an interview conducted by ‘
The New York Times
‘.

Specifically, the executive points out that, beyond the shortage of chips, the company is manufacturing, more or less, the same number of consoles as in previous generations.

“It is not because the offer is smaller than ever. The offer is actually as great as ever. The thing is, the demand is outpacing the supply for all of us, ”Spencer explains.

Although the number of Xbox consoles sold to date has not been made public by Microsoft – the firm’s parent company, which prefers to look at the number of users who use its services – it is estimated that, to date, has managed to sell about 8 million systems between Series X and Series S, the less powerful, fully digital version of the machine. According to Spencer, it is being the best seller in the history of the company.

To date, Xbox 360 – the desktop that had to compete with PS3 between 2006 and 2013 – is the most successful during Microsoft’s career in the video game, with some 85 million units sold. Considering Spencer’s claims, the new Series has a chance of taking the spot from him. Especially if the chip shortage ends between the end of the year and early 2023, which is what most manufacturers are aiming for.

Be that as it may, the main objective of the company at the moment is to attract new players who use its gaming services in the cloud – xCloud– and by download –Xbox Game Pass-. The idea of the signature is that the user can play their titles from anywhere; also from a ‘smartphone’ or a tablet. Something that, in addition, is already possible. At least, as long as the player has a device that meets the necessary requirements.
