The police services were informed around 8:20 p.m. via the emergency number 100 of shots fired in the center of the capital.
A security perimeter has been installed around Place De Brouckère. No information has filtered on the circumstances of the shooting, nor on the identity of the victim.
“I have no information on the state of health of the victim for the moment”, indicated Ilse Van de keere, the spokeswoman for the Brussels police.
The Brussels public prosecutor’s office took up the case. The police say they are deploying the maximum means to find the perpetrator(s) of the shots.
“Following the shootings in the center of Brussels, I reaffirm my support for the police who were immediately on the spot. I will never accept insecurity. The perpetrators must be taken out of harm’s way immediately. Brussels is an open city where everyone should feel safe,” mayor of Brussels Philippe Close said on Twitter.
