The President of the European Commission threatened to hit the weakest spot in Russia

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in an interview with a German TV channel ARD stated that if Russia starts an invasion of Ukraine, the European Union will use the most powerful lever of influence on the Russian Federation.

According to her, now Russia’s weakest point is the economy, so the sanctions will apply to this particular industry.

“Financial and economic sanctions will mean that the Russian Federation will be practically cut off from all international financial markets,” von der Leinen said.

She clarified that at the moment the question of disconnecting Russia from the international interbank system for making payments SWIFT remains open. If a “powerful lever” is applied, the sanctions will affect all goods produced in Europe that the Russian Federation needs to modernize and diversify the economy.

A preliminary agreement on these sanctions has already been reached between Brussels, Canada, the US and the UK.
