The 51st edition of the great Spanish Olympic sailing regatta will have a special relevance for being an Olympic year. Some of the best athletes in the world will see their faces in the bay of Palma in anticipation of what can happen this summer at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (July 24 to August 9).
For this reason, Sofía Iberostar, organized by the Nàutic S’Arenal Club, the San Antonio de la Playa Maritime Club and the Royal Nautical Club of Palma, and which has the support of the Balearic Sailing Federation, expects a large participation which will be located around 1000 sailors from more than 50 countries that will compete distributed in ten Olympic classes, Dragon and cruises.
The director of the Princesa Sofía Iberostar Trophy, Ferrán Muniesa, explained that, being an Olympic year, many countries will close their national teams in the Mallorcan regatta, so “the goal is to maintain the highest level in the organization,” he said.
In this edition, the San Antonio de la Playa Maritime Club will host the Laser and Laser Radial classes, and the male and female windsurf (RS: X) categories, while the Nàutic S’Arenal Club will host the Sailors from the rest of the Olympic categories (470M, 470F, 49er, 49er FX, Finn and Nacra17). For its part, the Dragon Class competition and cruise ships will take place at the Royal Yacht Club of Palma.
Dragon and cruises will be precisely the categories that will open the Princess Sofia Iberostar Trophy. The regattas at the Royal Yacht Club of Palma will be held from April 26 to 29, and for the Dragon class it will be Grand Prix, which is expected to involve nearly fifty teams.
The Olympic sailing classes, on the other hand, will compete from March 30 to April 4, a day reserved for the celebration of the Medal Races, endings of double scoring to which only the best of the classification access. .
