Some people ask, is it too exaggerated to link the political situation in Hong Kong with China-US relations? My response is no exaggeration. Hong Kong and Taiwan are the two political fronts for the US to attack China.

The U.S. State Department updated the State Department’s website on May 5, revised the “List of Facts about U.S.-Taiwan-U.S.-Taiwan Relations”, and deleted the previously stated “recognition that Taiwan is a part of China” and “the U.S. does not support Taiwan independence.” . The deletion of these contents obviously violates the solemn commitment made by the United States on the Taiwan issue before. This move can be summed up simply as:

1. America says one thing and does another. During the video meeting between the leaders of China and the United States, U.S. President Joe Biden repeatedly reiterated to Chinese President Xi Jinping recently that the U.S. supports the “One China” policy. But in fact, on such an important website of the U.S. State Department, major statements such as “recognition that Taiwan is a part of China” and “the United States does not support Taiwan independence” have been blatantly deleted. This is a typical act of directly attacking the country through the Taiwan issue.

2. Seek political interests both internally and externally. The short-term purpose of the US move is to support Taiwan independence forces and cater to the demands of anti-China voices in the US. After the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the United States did not send troops to assist Ukraine, which alarmed the Taiwanese separatists. They chanted “Ukraine today, Taiwan tomorrow”. The United States cannot clear its selfish consideration of withdrawing troops from Afghanistan and Ukraine. It can only continue to make small moves to put more pressure on the country on the Taiwan issue.

Internally, the United States faced a high inflation rate of 8.5%, and the Federal Reserve raised interest rates, causing US stocks to plummet. U.S. President Joe Biden said he would withdraw additional import tariffs on Chinese products to ease inflation. Because of its own economic problems, the United States was forced to voluntarily make concessions to China on the issue of tariffs. It has to pressurize on the Taiwan issue to highlight its anti-China stance.

3. China-US relations have fundamentally changed. In 1972, US President Richard Nixon visited China, and this year marks the 50th anniversary. At that time, the United States adopted the strategy of “joining China to control the Soviet Union”, hoping to win over China, a socialist country, against the Soviet Union, another major socialist country that had been competing with the United States for hegemony. According to ideology, the United States should be anti-Soviet and anti-China at the same time. However, American politics is so realistic that it emphasizes substantive interests, and ideology is just a pretense. Therefore, the United States reconciled with China and established diplomatic relations with China in 1979. The US officials who accompanied Nixon to visit China analyzed afterwards that China’s diplomatic strategy is clear, and its core interest is to safeguard national sovereignty, especially on the Taiwan issue, and promoting cross-strait reunification is China’s key interest. As long as we can make concessions to China on this issue, other issues can be discussed. Therefore, the premise of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States is to kick the Taiwan authorities who participated in the United Nations as the “Republic of China” out of the United Nations.

For 50 years, the U.S. political circle has clearly understood that China’s core interest is the reunification of the two sides of the Taiwan Strait. Now the U.S. State Department has openly removed the content of “Taiwan is a part of China”. It cannot be explained that the United States is just playing politics, and playing politics can find many other things to play with. This incident illustrates a crystal-clear fact that Sino-US relations have undergone a qualitative change.

In the eyes of the United States, today’s China is equal to the Soviet Union of the day. The United States believes that China wants to compete with her for hegemony, so it must comprehensively suppress and even subvert China. And the ideological rhetoric of the United States blatantly boasting that she is the so-called beacon of democracy in the world and that it wants to fight against a “totalitarian” China is worthless. The establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States in 1979 is already a concentrated expression of the US’ practical diplomacy, and there is another historical event, which is also a good proof.

In 1989, the “June 4th Incident” occurred in China, and China broke with Western countries for a time. Although Eastern Europe had undergone great changes at that time, but the Soviet Union had not yet disintegrated, the then-US president Lao Bu, who was aware of the need for stability in US-China relations, sent an emissary to visit China. A declassified State Department document held by the University of Washington shows that at the end of June 1989, as soon as the situation in China stabilized, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher and National Security Advisor Scow Croft paid a secret visit to China to meet with Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping. The two emissaries relayed that Bush said that the relationship between the United States and China has global strategic interests for both sides, and the returnee students who return to China after studying in the United States will also help promote China’s science and technology and economy. We hope that China will be considerate and put the overall situation first, so that the long-term relationship between the two countries will continue to develop healthily. In December 1989, Bush Sr. again sent Scowcroft to China to meet with the then leader Deng Xiaoping and Premier Li Peng.

The conclusion is that the U.S. is before the interests of the country, especially when it competes with the Soviet Union for hegemony, the U.S. president will put ideology aside and put aside the American opposition to public opinion, even if China has experienced such a big event as “June 4th” , the United States should also make peace with China.

30 years of Hedong, 30 years of Hexi, the friends of the day can be turned against each other today. More than 30 years ago, the President of the United States could withstand the pressure of Congress and the people and make peace with China. More than 30 years later, the President of the United States will provoke Congress and the public to hate China and add the trumped-up “Xinjiang genocide” charge to China. The United States has determined that it wants to confront China in an all-round way. Under this premise, Hong Kong, as the forefront of the Sino-US struggle, will always face fierce confrontation in the future, and everyone must be mentally prepared.
