The conservative lobby group of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is reported to support Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as the main opponent.
In a proactive step against the new congresswoman from New York, the chamber will reportedly support former CNBC presenter Michelle Caruso-Cabrera on Wednesday.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce typically supports business-oriented Republican candidates. With more than 3 million companies, it is one of the largest corporate organizations in the world that is committed to business-friendly measures such as tax breaks, legal reforms and trade promotion.
Ms. Caruso-Cabrera’s campaign has reportedly raised $ 1 million for her challenge against the progressive “Squad” member. The campaign is expected to report $ 800,000 in cash plus first quarter costs when it officially submits financial statements to the Federal Elections Commission on April 15.
A spokeswoman for Ms. Caruso-Cabrera’s campaign reported The Independent that the strong support was “not a surprise”.
“The Bronx and Queens now need jobs. Michelle Caruso-Cabrera supports job retention and creation while her anti-job opponent AOC Amazon kicked out and distributed more than 25,000 well-paid jobs with benefits, ”spokeswoman Katy Delgado said.
“It is no surprise that organizations looking for jobs in the Bronx and Queens are supporting Michelle.”
While the campaign would not confirm her supporters, sources said the chamber would raise funds for Ms. Caruso-Cabrera and mobilize local business in Queens to participate in the area code on June 23.
“Michelle is one of the most qualified and competent candidates we have met in this cycle. Their communication skills in terms of employment and growth will be in clear contrast to AOC, ”said Scott Reed, senior political strategist at the US Chamber of Commerce, on Wednesday. “We plan to use our national network to give her the financial resources to win this race.”
Ms. Ocasio-Cortez is aware of the “primarying” tactic used to replace candidates in safe places before the general election. A process that made her rise to Congress after defeating incumbent Joe Crowley with only 15,897 votes in the 2018 area code.
