Denmark: The United States has reportedly spied on top European political leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel. According to Danish and European media reports, the U.S. National Security Agency carried out spying between 2012 and 2014 with the help of a Danish intelligence agency.
According to Danish Rodeo, the US has leaked information to political leaders and top officials in Germany, Sweden, Norway and France via Danish Internet cables. It is reported that the US spying took advantage of the mutual surveillance cooperation with the Danish military intelligence.
In addition to Angela Merkel, information was leaked to leaders, including then-Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and opposition leader Pierre Steinbruck. Internet traffic and chat-messaging services, including SMS test messages, telephone calls and search history, were reportedly added.
According to the report, Danish Defense Minister Train Bramsen issued a warning in August 2020 regarding espionage. However, the Danish Ministry of Defense has not yet responded to questions from the news agency. It is not clear whether Denmark has authorized the US to use surveillance systems in neighboring countries for espionage.
