As the CNews study showed, in 2022 the business of most of the developers of the most popular Russian operating systems has grown significantly. Taking into account the fact that some of the companies began to earn significantly also on their third-party products, the editors compared the revenues of key market players related exclusively to their operating systems.

Top OS developers

As CNews found out, 2022 can be considered very important for the developers of the most popular Russian operating systems, both in terms of changes in financial indicators and in terms of rotation in the conditional top formed on their basis.

The revenue indicators studied in the editorial study relate to the Astra group (Astra Linux OS line), Basalt SPO (Alt) and Red Soft (Red OS), STC IT ROSA (ROSA) and Open Mobile platforms” (“Aurora”).

A year earlier, CNews had already made a similar comparison with respect to the listed company’s business. However, then only the full revenue of development organizations (their main legal entities) was taken into account – without taking into account what percentage of it fell on sales and support of the OS. The editors then proceeded from the fact that operating systems are their main products, and other solutions are sold to a greater or lesser extent thanks to them.

At that time, the first place in sales went to Astra, the second to Red Soft, the third to Basalt SPO, the fourth to Open Mobile Platform, and the fifth to STC IT ROSA.

2022 turned out to be very significant for the business performance of Russian OS developers

This time, CNews decided to change its approach and compare the revenues of key market players related directly to their OS.

This was largely due to a very noticeable increase in sales of secondary products in the Astra group. As CNews found out at the end of May 2023, at the end of the reporting period, the revenue from them amounted to 1.11 billion rubles. (16.96% of the total). A year earlier, they accounted for only 109.4 million rubles. (4.61%).

Top leaders

In general, the revenue of the Astra group in 2022 reached 6.53 billion rubles. (2.37 billion rubles a year earlier; an increase of 175%). That is, OS-related revenue was at the level of 5.42 billion rubles, which confirmed the status of Astra Linux as a long-term leader in the top.

Second place goes to the OS “Viola”. As CNews was assured, the chairman of the board of directors of “Basalt SPO” Alexey Smirnov, its entire business is focused on sales and support of the OS. Therefore, there is no need to make any significant amendments to the financial results of LLC Basalt SPO. At the end of 2022, the organization’s revenue increased by 172% and amounted to 892.7 million rubles.

In third place – “Red OS”. The total revenue of Red Soft LLC in the reporting period increased by 122% to RUB 1.29 billion. However, as representatives of the company told CNews, recently it has been actively developing its other software products, such as DBMS. Excluding their sales, revenue related to fixed assets in 2022 accounted for 677.2 million rubles.

Second echelon

At the time of publication of this material, Open Mobile Platform and STC IT ROSA were unable to tell CNews whether any significant adjustment to their public financials is required if we are going to examine their OS-only revenue. However, they are so significantly behind the top three that when calculating market shares (it will be done below), this can be considered not very important.

The financial performance of the Aurora OS developers continued to fall. During the reporting period, the level of revenue decreased by 41% and amounted to 66.8 million rubles. Conditional fifth place.

Market shares

Thus, the sales market shares of the most popular Russian operating systems were distributed as follows. For Astra Linux – 75.9%, Viola – 12.5%, Red OS – 9.5%, ROSA – 1.2%, Aurora – 0.9%.

Will new members appear in the top

Whether in the near future new Russian solutions will be able to oust anyone in the presented top is an open question.

In one of the recent Market.CNews ratings, two still little-known operating systems were mentioned: “Osnova” developed by NPPKT JSC and “Atlant” by the LLC of the same name.

However, the financial indicators of NPPKT JSC for 2022 are not publicly available, and at the end of 2021, it had a 54% drop in revenue, and it was at the level of 55.2 million rubles.

Atlant LLC was registered on March 31, 2022, so its financial performance for this year is very conditional: revenue of 582 thousand rubles.

As for the Aurora OS, its place in the rating by the end of 2023 may well be noticeably strengthened due to the special attention to this project from the state.
