(CNN) – The body of Faye Swetlik, 6, who was wanted since Monday after disappearing in front of his home in South Carolina, was found Thursday, authorities said.
“It is with great regret that we announce that we have found a body that the coroner identified as Faye Marie Swetlik,” Chief Byron Snellgrove of the Cayce Department of Public Security said at a press conference.
Snellgrove said the police are treating the case as a homicide.
“At this time no arrests have been made,” Snellgrove said, adding that “we need you to know that this is a fluid investigation and that we are working diligently.”
A deceased man was also found during the search, the police chief said, and the investigation is just beginning.
He assured residents that the area was safe and did not answer questions.
He came home safely; then disappeared
Faye was last seen playing in the yard in front of his house in Cayce after arriving from school by bus on Monday. More than 250 police and investigators spent the last few days looking for her.
The first grade student at Springdale Elementary School got off her bus Monday afternoon and arrived at her home, in the Churchill Heights neighborhood, according to Cayce Police Sgt. Evan Antley.
But at some point, around 3:45 pm, his family realized that Faye had disappeared, Antley said.
Police were called around 5 pm and began a search with more than 100 law enforcement officers, including search dogs. The number of people in the search increased to more than 250 on Tuesday and the FBI also helped with the operation.
Faye was last seen wearing a black shirt with the word “peace”, a floral print skirt and rain boots with dots, according to the Cayce Department of Public Safety.
The police previously requested that anyone who has a security system in their home portal and lives in the Churchill Heights neighborhood contact the police.
