Thirty inmates at Archambault Institution in Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines, in the Laurentians, contracted COVID-19, forcing the temporary suspension of visits.
Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) said on Wednesday measures have been deployed in this medium and minimum security penitentiary to curb the spread of the virus within its walls.
Positive cases come from the minimum security unit which has a capacity of 215 inmates. No cases have so far been identified in the medium security section or among staff.
Contact tracing has been initiated and rapid screening tests are being used on all detainees and staff, in order to quickly isolate any people who may have been infected.
In addition to controlling comings and goings at Archambault Institution, the measures deployed include the wearing of face coverings by staff and cleaning and disinfection operations.
