This is how you stay mentally fit

Under pressure in the home office

Working from home is part of the corona crisis: What some employees find practical, puts others under psychological stress.

Düsseldorf First it was teachers and self-employed, then more and more employees who felt increasingly under pressure. They asked for help from the Oberberg Day Clinic in the Center for Mental Health on Berlin’s Kurfürstendamm. “Since May and June, the corona-related demand has increased by around 25 percent due to psychological stress,” says Bastian Willenborg, head of the day clinic in Berlin.

You can no longer lead a normal life. They take hygiene and contact bans seriously and take responsibility. They hold back in order to step in for their colleagues if necessary – and reach their limits in the home office. This is how people get into a crisis. “It is more and more reflected in anxiety disorders, addictive behavior and depression,” states psychiatrist Willenborg.

Layoffs, short-time work, prescribed home office: the second wave of the corona pandemic is having an increasing impact on the world of work. More than 52 percent of the German population are of the opinion that their mental health suffers from frequent work in their own four walls. This is shown by a representative survey commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Education as part of the European work research conference beyondwork2020.

Numerous employees are already experiencing it: health and economic fears are increasingly discharging into the psyche. In psychological practices and specialized clinics the diaries overflow. Patients often have to wait three months or more for treatment.

“While there is often talk of a lockdown light, the current effects on the psyche are anything but ‘light’,” says Reinhild Fürstenberg, managing director of the Fürstenberg Institute in Hamburg. She advises companies and executives on the role of employee health and performance. The experience from the first lockdown in the spring made it even more difficult for many to deal with the situation, she says. Coupled with the challenges of the dark season, it determines a high level of explosiveness for mental stability.
