This is the history and evolution of Samsung’s foldable smartphones – Samsung Newsroom Malaysia

Foldable phones have changed the way people enjoy and use their mobile devices on a daily basis, delivering a screen that gives greater flexibility, more possibilities and new experiences.

A few days before a new Samsung Unpacked, scheduled for next Wednesday, August 10, it should be remembered that Samsung first introduced the concept of flexible screens in 2011 and then, after a decade, officially launched its first folding mobile devices, creating a whole new category.

Galaxy Fold was the first Smartphone in this series and with which Samsung began its folding legacy in 2019.

This model, which folds in the form of a book, was later joined by the Galaxy Z Flip, which emulates the old phones that were characterized by their “clamshell” shape.

Both devices stand out for delivering new horizons: with Galaxy Fold, multitasking capacity was enhanced, to perform various actions, simultaneously, faster and more comfortably thanks to an unprecedented expandable screen.

For its part, the Galaxy Flip offered a new way of capturing images with its flex mode, which helps users express themselves in a unique and hands-free way.

With these characteristics, the foldables managed to surprise and conquer an audience like no Smartphone had managed to do before. Without going any further, a study carried out by the consulting firm Fieldwork in 2021, determined that 49% of those surveyed considered that foldables are the greatest innovation of recent times, when it comes to Smartphones.

The evolution

The appearance, design and capacity of this new series of foldables has been improving since the launch of the Z series in 2019 and with this they have shown that the technology continues to be perfected.

With a new generation the following year, the improvements became apparent, those that had to do with design, cameras and screen, but challenges such as durability were also addressed, something that has become a fundamental pillar to develop.

Its design was perceived more sophisticated by a hinge that is hidden (Hideaway Hinge) and that fits perfectly into the body of the device, giving the sensation of a screen without interruptions.

It also included sweeper technology, within the space between the body and the hinge housing to repel dust and unwanted particles.

the third generation

Today we can see how after a decade of progress and three generations of innovation, Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 brought greater durability and a better user experience.

Samsung’s dedication to creating new foldable innovations enabled it to reach another milestone in 2021 with the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3, the first foldables to receive an IPX8 waterproof rating.

The devices also feature Corning®️ Gorilla®️ Glass Victus™, a tougher glass to protect against scratches and accidental drops.

And in addition, the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G is the first folding smartphone on the market that supports S Pen, Samsung’s smart pen.

The future

With the new generation that will be known in the next Galaxy Unpacked, Samsung aims to show users that they can do more than they think possible and continue to lead the category of foldable smartphones with even more advanced technology and delivering new tools to increase the productivity, express yourself and create.
